Convert from Praat TextGrid to a (Readable) Text File

Note: This page has trouble with some files created with recent version of Praat (likely, it has trouble reading some unicode encoded files). You may want to try downloading and using the Praat script available at the bottom of the main tools page. --TK, March 3rd, 2009

Praat Screenshot - Write to chronological text file...This tool converts TextGrids (saved in the Chronological text format) to readable text. Each speaker should have her or his own Tier in the TextGrid. The script simply parses the (chronological) TextGrid and outputs the transcript information in the common 'drama-like' format. It presents an html-formatted version as well as a tab-delimited version that can be downloaded and then opened in a spreadsheet (like MS Excel) or a word-processor. The options should be pretty self-explanatory - try them out, you can always re-upload your file with different settings if you don't like the outcome.

SLAAP transcripts are based on Praat TextGrids because those provide the best temporal accuracy for linking representations of speech with the audio recording of the speech itself. screen shot of Praat edit windowI recommend that people, even non-SLAAP users, transcribe using Praat. This tool is intended to aid those people who are using Praat to transcribe in making those resultant transcripts more human readable.

Note: This tool is currently under development. Please let Tyler know if you encounter problems or would like to suggest or request improvements.
